      <image:title>Projects - Coal power phaseout - Benefits of no new coal policies</image:title>
      <image:caption>The most effective strategy for reducing the impacts of coal use is to stop building new coal plants. New coal plants lead to larger stranded assets under climate policy scenarios and require more rapid retirement of the entire coal fleet, by ten years if all plants currently in the pipeline are built.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Projects - Coal power phaseout - Lifetime limits for coal plants</image:title>
      <image:caption>Even if no new coal power plants are built, scenarios for meeting the Paris climate goals see accelerated retirement of the existing fleet. In our plant-by-plant analysis, 20-year lifetime limits are consistent with a 1.5°C scenario, and 35-year limits with a well below 2°C scenario.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Coal power phaseout - Metrics to prioritize retirement</image:title>
      <image:caption>Which coal power plants plants are best to retire first depends on many criteria. However, our analysis of over 1000 plants in China finds that 18% (112 GW) perform poorly according to technical, economic, and environmental criteria and are low-hanging fruit for rapid retirement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Gas leaks and pipelines - High rates of repair failures</image:title>
      <image:caption>We identify over 10,000 repair failures in our state-wide data analysis, representing 20% of repairs during the study period. On-site measurements of a sample of high-emitting leaks suggest that over half of repairs do not fully eliminate leaks.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Gas leaks and pipelines - Presence of “super-failures”</image:title>
      <image:caption>Natural gas systems are characterized by super-emitter behavior, where a small number of elements throughout the supply chain contribute the bulk of total emissions. Our analysis shows there are also “super-failures” — locations where leaks are repaired over and over again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Gas leaks and pipelines - Role of data transparency</image:title>
      <image:caption>Our results highlight the importance of data transparency in climate policy. Utilities in Massachusetts are required to publicly report leak and repair activity, but this is not the case in many states. More data reporting can help us track progress on local climate action.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Greenhouse gas metrics - Time-dependent climate impacts</image:title>
      <image:caption>The climate impacts of energy technologies depend on their time of use. As global temperatures approach a level that we do not want to exceed (for example, the 1.5 or 2°C target set out in the Paris Agreement), technologies with high life cycle methane emissions, including natural gas for electricity or heating, become less favorable.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Greenhouse gas metrics - Role of models in metric testing</image:title>
      <image:caption>Greenhouse gas metrics can lead to unintended consequences when they are used in technology evaluation and policy. By modeling the use of different metrics in technology evaluation and emissions policy, we can understand their potential consequences and make more informed and effective design choices.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Greenhouse gas metrics - Guidelines for choosing metrics</image:title>
      <image:caption>The appropriate climate metric depends on the technology and policy context. For example, some metrics are useful for keeping temperature below target levels, while others are more effective at limiting rates of temperature change. We develop guidelines for choosing metrics to meet different policy objectives.</image:caption>
