Mattie and Morgan's research highlights the risks of banking on uncertain carbon dioxide removal
In their new paper published in Nature Communications, primary author Mattie and co-author Morgan model a two-stage decision process for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) scale-up. They find that governments and industries could maximize the likelihood of achieving climate goals if they initially keep expectations around future scalability of CDR low. To be most effective, these actors should invest early in emerging CDR methods while pursuing ambitious emissions reductions at the source.
